I am Mary Ault Cooper granddaughter of Irene Payne Ault, and great granddaughter of Byrd Payne. I am very happy to be placed on the Board of Directors of the Payne family organization. It will be an honor to serve with all of you.
Hi Cousins!
It has been about 10 years since my family last visited our Lone Mountain homestead, and we have really missed it. My grandmother was Kathleen Payne Stockwell, my dad is John Payne Stockwell and I am Lara Stockwell Wilson.
My first visit as a toddler to Lone Mt. was captured by snapshots of my dad and me sitting on a horse and on the old Model A (?), but later visits were for family weddings when I was 14 and 17 years old – so much fun! Hay bales and bands, kegs, music, food and our dear Aunt Al and Uncle Roger made a huge impression on my life.
Ann Rose and I organized 3 “get togethers” at the homestead with our Stockwell cousins over a period of probably 5
years. We were all young parents or singles and had a fabulous time jumping off the trestle, renting pontoon boats, having bonfires, sitting on the porch while the musicians played and watching the incredible firefly displays. Evan Lacke joined us as a young college student and my kids remember him as the fun young guy who played with them.
Now my kids are in college, but both have been asking for years to make a trip to LM. With daughter Betsy graduating in May and planning to move to California, and son Zach reaching the end of his vacationing with parents, we are all looking forward to Easter at LM with Amy Potts and family and Jenni and Tara (Stockwell) and family.
My husband Rich and I have more time now do things on our own, and the Lone Mt. homestead is a great opportunity to reconnect with family and for me to give my efforts to Club Payne.
I look forward to meeting all of you and have marked my calendar for next summer’s reunion!
Very Sincerely, Lara
I am Laura Lacke Torres, and I am the Granddaughter of Roger Payne and Daughter of Amy Payne Potts. Some of the fondest memories of my childhood took place at The Lone Mountain House. I now have two beautiful children (Ashton and Lilah) and will bring them to the house just as my parents did. We will walk on the railroad tracks together, swim in Lake Norris, and sit in front of bonfires in the backyard. So many memories are yet to come! It is very important to me that the house be taken care of for the enjoyment of my children, and my children’s children. I am very happy to be a Club Payne Board Member, and have looked forward to being involved in taking care of the house as an adult. Let me know what I can do to help!
I am Mike Perkins son of Tip Payne son of Byrd Payne. My name given at birth was Michael Byrd Payne which was later changed to Michael Byrd Perkins. The Perkins is from my step father, Jules David Perkins. Mother divorced Tip about 1938/39 and she married J. D. in 1946.
My father lived in the Lone Mountain House from 1945 until his death in 1959. After his death I assumed secondary responsibility for the house with Uncle Roger Payne and David Rose taking on the primary responsibility.
I was the primary architect of the 2006-2008 reorganization of the original Payne Company into the Club Payne structure. All the original children of Byrd and Sally have passed on and their children are getting old so it is now time for the next generation to assume responsibility for the club and the Lone Mountain House.
I hope you in the next generation are both willing and able.
Hi everyone, I am Lori Westphal, daughter of Linda Kite Westphal and granddaughter of Anne Payne Kite. I spent many summers at Lone Mountain with my family and grandparents, walking the railroad tracks, wading in the creeks and listening to stories from days past. I remember fondly the ripe Tennessee tomatoes slapped on on white bread slathered with mayo that we all inhaled. We snapped beans, played cards and scoured the house for treasures. I know preserving the house and the memories of Lone Mountain would thrill my grandmother who dearly loved her childhood home. I am most pleased to serve on the board.
Hello everyone, I’m Evan Lacke, grandson of Alberta and Roger Payne and son of Amy Payne Potts. I love Lone Mountain and have the fondest memories of family trips to the house with all of the different branches of the Payne family. We continue to add to these memories with at least a few trips every year. I am so thankful for the continued family support in keeping the house alive and thankful for the hard work of my grandfather and David Rose for keeping the house going during its formative years. I am also most thankful for my dear mother, Amy Potts, whose perseverance and hard work has allowed us to attain a structure which encourages family involvement, awareness, and use of the house. It seems like every time I speak with her she is tirelessly working on Lone Mountain related-matters and is always filled with new and exciting ideas. My wife, Sarah Ellen, and I look forward to many more visits and memories to be shared with all of our Payne family and friends. It truly is a special place to be shared and enjoyed. I continue to add to my banjo tune repertoire and look forward to playing on the front porch for the generations to come and to share in the wonderful stories and history of the place, the family, and the region. Love all of you and hope to see you each very soon!
Hi, I’m Judy Watts Breckenridge, daughter of Kathryn Ault Watts and granddaughter of Irene Payne Ault. I was in Uncle Roger’s “Squad Patrol” back in the mid ’60s when the first renovations to the Lone Mt. House began. We all had a great week–even though we bathed in the lake– and as we worked, Uncle Roger told us stories about the Payne Family History. Distance-wise, I’m probably the closest family member–an hour and a half away–so now that we’re “empty nesters,” my husband and I are hoping to enjoy the house more–especially with the new marina so close. I’ve served on the board before, and I’m happy to do whatever I can in the future.
Hello all –
I am Emily Cummins (formally Peck), the great granddaughter of Sally and granddaughter of Betsy Taylor (sister of David Rose). My family grew up going to the Lone Mountain house for Thanksgiving and Summer retreats. We have not visited in quite a few years, but I am thrilled to get involved!
My name is Anna Lacke. I am the granddaughter of Roger Keith Payne. I have very fond memories of the Lone Mountain House and I would love to continue making memories there with friends and family. It has changed so much over the years! The last few visits, we have rented pontoon boats and visited the floating bar out on Guy Jenkins old land. I miss the days where all of the families, immediate and extended, enjoyed Easter and/or Thanksgiving at the House. I hope we can resume those wonderful times!
